Lace or net fabric is considered as a specialty fabric as it is delicate and requires special care for it to last long. It has an open weave that can easily be damaged and hence requires special care. The net attires refer to the ornamental fabric that is carefully curated by hand or machine with cotton, synthetic fibers or linen as a base material. Knowing the base material helps you in taking better care of them. For most items that are made from net based fabric, hand wash with cold water and mild detergent or soap is recommended. At any time, during washing or otherwise rigorous scrubbing or rubbing must be avoided as it can damage the fibers and in turn the entire lace or net fabric. Tips to maintain and Clean net attires
Whether you own selective pieces of net attire or you have an extensive collection of the lacy garb, you will have to use these smart tips to make it long lasting.
Storage:
Proper storage of this delicate fabric is crucial for its maintenance. So, make sure you always place it in the cool and dry area. When you are not using it, ensure that you wrap it properly in white cotton sheets, unbleached muslin or acid-free tissue paper and place it in cardboard. Please make a note that you should not put anything heavy on your lacy garment and avoid wrapping it in plastic or keeping it in a wooden chest, as they contain an acidic substance that can cause damage to the delicate fabric. Additionally, ensure that you allow the lace to breathe by taking it out and exposing it to air in every 6 months.
Laundry:
Machine-based net or lace is comparatively more durable than the handmade net or lace. Vintage lace is extremely delicate, so care has to be taken accordingly. If it is machine based or the fabric looks durable, then you can go for machine wash. Provided you make sure that you use mild detergent and place the net fabric in the lingerie bag and then wash. However, if the net is delicate or you are having the vintage lace fabric then you should go for hand wash. The process is simple: Fill the warm water in the container and add a mild non-detergent cleansing agent. Now, soak the fabric in the mixture for 45 minutes and then rinse thoroughly until the detergent washes away and clean water runs through. At any point, do not rub or wring it. If you are unsure how the fabric is going to hold against washing, then don’t forget to do a patch test. Wash a section of the fabric and test, based on the result, proceed further.
Drying
Drying is a very important process in the maintenance of this delicate fabric because this stage has the higher potential to cause damage to the fabric. So, being gentle is the key. While drying the lace, make sure you place the wet lace or net over an absorbent towel lining and then gently pat until the towel absorbs the maximum moisture. Once, you have the damp lace, place it on a large white sheet on the flat surface, and place weights along the edges of the net or lace so that it does get curled up while drying. Let the lace dry completely and you are done.
Ironing
Net fabric, as stated before, is extremely delicate and even if you store it perfectly, sometimes it does get wrinkled or takes the shape of the folds. So, make sure you store it in a dry place and also ensure that the place is moth-free and no insects have an access to it. However, if there is a need to iron the net or lace fabric then great care has to be taken in order to avoid snagging the fine thread works and also accidental pulling of the fabric. So, while you are ironing, make sure that you lay a towel over the ironing board and then place the delicate fabric over it to iron it. Placing a towel will protect the fabric from dust and dirt. For smaller pieces of lace, you can hold them in place by using u-pins to fix their position before ironing. Please note that depending on the type of fabric, always use the highest safety setting. For instance, if your lace comprises of synthetic fibers, you must opt for cooler setting to avoid melting of the fabric. If you are unsure about the fabric always opt for cool to cool-medium temperature to stay on a safer side. Additionally, ironing can also be used in drying the wet lace. When it is wet, start ironing with a cool iron and then gradually change the settings to cool-medium, when the fabric is 85 to 90% dry, stop ironing and let it air dry.
